The Breathing Association Honors Carrie Nelson Black with Ohio Historic Marker.


The Breathing Association celebrated its centennial finale by honoring the passion and leadership of their founder Carrie Nelson Black on her 148th birthday.  The event featured a luncheon and the unveiling of an Ohio Historic Marker at The Breathing Association’s headquarters in her honor.  Members of Carrie’s family traveled to Ohio for the occasion where they served as guest speakers at the luncheon. Family members included Joan Evans Taylor, great niece; Gayle Dashiell, great niece; Elyse Marland Evans Fiebert, great niece; Richard H. Evans, Jr.; and Leanne Johnson, neice of Carrie’s son Samuel L. Black, Jr. Additional featured speakers were Mary Jo Kilroy, Franklin County Commissioner; Charleta Tavares, Columbus City Councilwoman; and Susan Tilgner, Franklin County Health Commissioner; Debbie Coleman, City of Columbus Assistant Health Commissioner.  NBC 4 News Co-Anchor, Colleen Marshall served as the Masters of Ceremonies

THE BREATHING ASSOCIATION offers programs for people with and at risk of lung health disease.  If you live in central Ohio and you

  • Or a family member has asthma, COPD, emphysema, bronchitis, or other breathing problems
  • Are a teacher who wants his/her students to learn to say “No” to tobacco use
  • Are a smoker who wants to quit for good
  • Need assistance with lung health medical supplies
  • Are low income and need energy assistance, an air conditioner, or weatherization help
  • Are a senior with lung disease and need prescription assistance.

The Breathing Association, the historic leader in the fight against the infectious disease Tuberculosis, is seriously concerned about an airborne infectious global pandemic such as the avian flu. Our goal is to help you to stay informed and prepare for this threat. Here are a few links for information regarding this subject.
