Champions of Public Health Award

L to R : Marie E. Collart, Ph.D., President & CEO,
The Breathing Association;
Rob Crane, M.D., Clinical Asst. Prof., OSU College of Medicine; Mary
Ellen Wewers, Ph.D., Asso. Dean for Research, OSU College of Public Heath,
and Dionesha Clarke, representing her father, Bishop Timothy Clarke.
The Ohio State University’s College of Public Health’s
Champions of Public Health Awards recognize the impact that select individuals
and groups have made on the health of Ohioans. The Champions stand out
because they’re innovative, enthusiastic and devoted to solving
the public health problems in their communities. SmokeFree Columbus
Coalition, received the award in the Public Health Organization category.
Coalition co-chairs were Rob Crane, MD, Breathing Association President & CEO
Marie Collart, PhD, RN, and Bishop Timothy J. Clarke.
The SmokeFree Columbus campaign started in 2004 with the goal of educating
people on the deadly effects of second-hand smoke and gaining support
for a ban on smoking in all workplaces, including bars and restaurants.
Despite opposition, the campaign succeeded, and Columbus City Council
passed the ordinance, which went into effect on Jan. 31, 2005. This success
became the catalyst for the successful passage of a statewide ban on
smoking in November 2006. At that time, Ohio became the 15th state to
adopt smoke-free legislation for indoors. One nominator described it
as “a significant accomplishment that saves lives.”
The Ohio Hispanic Coalition Padrino Award
The Ohio Hispanic Coalition is pleased to honor The
Breathing Association, a long-time non-profit partner. The Breathing
Association has been instrumental in ensuring, through this partnership,
that the Latino community has access to smoking cessation programs
for adults, in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner.
Through the leadership of Marie Collart, President and CEO, The Breathing
Association brought to this partnership its expertise in the tobacco
prevention field, while the Ohio Hispanic Coalition brought its cultural
context expertise. A
match that worked extremely well, one that brought smoking cessation
to 700 Latinos, some of them had be tobacco dependent for more than 20
years.
The Ohio Women’s Hall
of Fame

L to R: Frances Strickland, Ohio First Lady; Marie E. Collart,
President & CEO, The Breathing Association; Anne Diehl, Carrie
Nelson Black re-enactor; Ohio Governor Ted Strickland.
The Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame, established in 1978 by the Women’s
Division of the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services, publicly recognizes
the many outstanding contributions Ohio women have made to their state
and nation. Members of the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame come
from all walks of life, but each has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment
to excellence, achievement and service to others.
The 2008 Induction Ceremony, held in the Ohio Statehouse,
was hosted by Governor Ted Strickland and Ohio’s First Lady Frances Strickland.
Carrie Nelson Black, founder of the Columbus Society for the Prevention
and Control of Tuberculosis (now known as The Breathing Association)
was inducted into the Hall of Fame at that ceremony.
Mrs. Black was a woman dedicated to improving the
quality of life for those less fortunate. As a pioneer and health crusader, she spent
her life in service to humanity. Other organizations that Carrie
founded include the Instructive District Nurses Association, the first
Columbus Health Dept. home nursing service and the Columbus Cancer Clinic,
the first free cancer clinic in the United States. A mother of
three children, she prevailed upon Governor Judson Harmon in 1911 to
proclaim Ohio’s first Mother’s Day.
